Face mill properties

An indexable face mill is a body that carries replaceable cutting inserts, used to machine large flat faces quickly. Because it's a two-part tool, the tab describes both the body and its cutting insert.

ℹ️ Every tool also shows Name, Description, Tool type, Allowed uses and Allowed stock materials above the geometry sections — see the overview.

Body — Main cutting geometry

Cutting diameter maximum DCX The largest diameter the body cuts at. With DC it bounds the cut for engagement and clearance checks.
Tool cutting edge angle KAPR The approach (lead) angle of the inserts (e.g. 45°, 90°). Affects chip thinning, surface finish and the forces CAM Assist plans around.
Cutting diameter DC The effective cutting diameter; a primary driver of feeds, speeds and stepover.
Depth of cut max APMX The deepest the cutter can take in a single axial pass.
Effective cutting edge count ZEFP The number of inserts engaged at the periphery. Directly scales the feed rate.

Body — Relief / shank geometry

Usable length LU The length below the holder that can be brought into the cut.
Overall length OAL Total length from the holder face to the cutting face.
Shank mode Basic for a simple body, or Advanced for a stepped body profile (body segments).
Protruding length LPR The cutter's default protruding length (stickout); assemblies can override it.

Body — Body material

Body material code BMC The material of the cutter body. Helps CAM Assist judge the tool's rigidity when planning cuts.

Body — Supplementary cutting geometry

Coolant supply property CSP Whether the cutter has through-tool coolant.
Connection code type machine side CCTMS Standardised connection/interface code on the machine side.
Insert shape code SC The standard shape code of the inserts the body takes.

Body — Optional details

Brand BRAND Tool maker.
Designation DES Catalogue/part number.
Face effective cutting edge count ZEFF Number of inserts effective on the end face.
Tool assembly length LTA Overall length of the assembled tool.
Functional length LF Functional length of the cutter.
Rotational speed maximum RPMX The maximum safe spindle speed for the cutter; CAM Assist won't exceed it.

Cutting insert

A face mill cuts with replaceable inserts; these fields describe the insert fitted to the body.

Corner radius RE The corner radius of the insert. Determines the achievable surface finish and the corner/edge detail it leaves.
Insert shape code SC The standard ISO shape code of the insert.
Body material code BMC The insert substrate (e.g. carbide grade).
Coating property CTP Whether the insert is coated.
Coating COATN The coating name/designation, if any.
Grade identification GRDID The manufacturer's grade.
Brand BRAND Insert maker.
Designation DES Insert catalogue/part number.
