What is 3+2 user defined mode?

3+2 user-defined mode is a setting in CAM Assist where you, the user, manually specify the tool orientation(s) for 3+2 machining. In this mode, CAM Assist will not choose the angle automatically – instead it will use the exact orientations (setups) that you define for machining the part. This is effectively the “By setup” mode: you create multiple setups (each with a certain rotation of the part), and CAM Assist generates toolpaths for those user-defined orientations only.

Why does 3+2 user defined mode matter in CAM Assist?

This mode matters because it gives experienced users control over how the part is approached. There are situations where you know the optimal angles or you have to constrain orientations (perhaps due to fixturing or machine limits). By using user-defined 3+2, you can ensure CAM Assist follows your specific setup plan. It essentially combines your machining insight with AI automation. If CAM Assist’s automatic choice isn’t desired or you need a very particular sequence (e.g., machine only from two opposite sides you’ve prepared fixtures for), user-defined mode is ideal. It also builds trust – you see each setup exactly as you created it, and CAM Assist just fills in the toolpaths for those setups. This mode is crucial when automatic might pick an orientation that is theoretically optimal but not practical in your shop’s context.

User Defined mode not only enables the selection of directions but also allows for the differentiation of allowable directions for roughing and finishing operations. Consequently, if a user desires a single direction for roughing, multiple directions can still be selected for finishing. Furthermore, User Defined mode accommodates the simultaneous application of various machine modes, such as employing multi-axis operations on one setup while restricting subsequent setups to 3-axis operations. This mode also permits the user to compel CAM Assist to operate in more conventional 3+1 styles by restricting all machining access along the workpiece's rotational plane.

Where can I find / adjust 3+2 user defined mode in CAM Assist?

In the CAM Assist General or Machine parameters section, when you select Machining mode: 3+2 Axis, you will have an option to choose the machining direction strategy. Choose “User defined” (sometimes labeled as “By setup”). When this is selected, CAM Assist will rely on the setups / orientations you’ve created in the CAM software. To adjust, you’ll create or modify setups in your CAM file. For example, in Fusion 360 or Mastercam, add a new setup with the part rotated to the orientation you want to machine. You might have Setup 1 at 0°, Setup 2 at 90° rotation, etc. CAM Assist will list these and allow you to pick which setups (orientations) to include. The additional controls appear in a “Setup orientation” section where you can manage those angle. If you want to change an angle, you adjust the setup in CAM and refresh CAM Assist. Essentially, you manage everything about orientation; CAM Assist then computes toolpaths for each chosen orientation.
